Founded in 1886, Shelmaliers GAA is one of the oldest and proudest GAA clubs in County Wexford. Representing the communities of Castlebridge, Screen and Curracloe, the club has played a central role in promoting Gaelic games and community spirit for well over a century. The club takes its name from the historic Shelmalier barony and has grown into one of the county’s leading dual clubs, fielding teams in hurling, football, camogie and ladies football.
The club’s history is rich with success and tradition. In its early years, teams from the parish competed under names such as the Emmets, the Redmonds and the famous Sally Beachers, enjoying major success in Wexford hurling. The area famously represented Wexford in the 1910 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship victory, the county’s first ever All-Ireland title. The modern Shelmaliers club was officially formed in 1952 following the amalgamation of the Ibars and Ardcolm clubs. Since then, the club has continued to build on its proud tradition both on and off the field.
Shelmaliers’ roll of honour includes Wexford Senior Hurling Championship titles in 2014 and 2020, as well as Senior Football Championship victories in 2018, 2021 and 2023. The club has also enjoyed sustained success at underage level, producing many talented players who have represented Wexford with distinction.
Located at Hollymount in Castlebridge, the club boasts excellent facilities including multiple playing pitches, modern training areas and a growing clubhouse development. These facilities support a thriving underage structure and provide a welcoming environment for players, families and supporters alike. Today, Shelmaliers GAA continues to grow as a progressive, community-driven club that proudly honours its past while looking confidently towards the future.
